What you will learn
Вы научитесь выбирать просьбу по ситуации, кратко извиняться за конкретную проблему и отвечать так, чтобы разговор продолжался.
A cooperative exchange
Could you close the window, please?
Sure — no problem.
I'm sorry I sent the wrong file.
I'll send the correct one now.
Three situations
At home — Could you turn the music down, please? — Of course. Sorry about the noise.
In a café — Excuse me, could we have some water, please? — Certainly. I'll bring it now.
At work — I'm sorry I sent the old version. — No problem. Could you send the new file before two? — Yes, I'll do it now.
Choose the request
Can you...? is normal and friendly in everyday contact. Could you...? is slightly softer and useful with strangers or when the request is inconvenient. Would you mind + verb-ing...? is careful and polite: Would you mind waiting here? Do not use would you mind to wait.
Please normally comes near the end or after the subject: Could you help me, please? Could you please help me?
Build the apology
Use Sorry about + noun: Sorry about the delay/noise/mistake. Use I'm sorry I + clause when you name your action: I'm sorry I interrupted you. A strong everyday apology is specific and includes repair: I'm sorry I sent the wrong address. I'll send the correct one now.
Respond naturally
Accept with Sure, Of course, Certainly, No problem. If you cannot help, avoid a bare No: Sorry, I can't right now, but I can do it after lunch. After an apology, That's all right or No problem fits a small everyday issue. For a serious problem, do not dismiss it automatically; focus on the repair.
Try it yourself
Write a four-line exchange for one situation: at home, in a café or at work. Include a polite request, a natural response, a specific apology and a repair.
Check: Use a base verb after can/could, an -ing form after would you mind, and a clear next action after the apology.
