Understand follow-up questions
- Still or sparkling? — негазированная или газированная вода?
- Anything else? — что-нибудь ещё?
- Is that for here or to take away? — здесь или с собой?
Нужно ответить на уточнение, а не повторять весь заказ.
Politeness without overloading
Одного please в просьбе обычно достаточно. I'd like... нейтрально и вежливо. Give me... грамматически возможно, но в обычном кафе звучит слишком прямолинейно.
If something is unavailable
Server: I'm sorry, we're out of tomato soup. Customer: In that case, I'll have the vegetable soup.
Фраза we're out of... означает, что блюдо закончилось. In that case вводит новый выбор.
